Today’s speaker was Judge Patrick Robertshaw (first cousin to our own Peter Robertshaw) .His talk centred on 2 policemen who were killed in Kirkheaton in 1951. Alfred Moore,a poultry farmer and career burglar was hanged for this offence.Judge Patrick expressed concern that this may have been a miscarriage of justice. A lot of the evidence against Alfred Moore was circumstantial. Other evidence which was accepted in 1951 as true would not be accepted nowadays due to today’s more rigorous standards. For example,a dying policeman’s deathbed testimony and a very dubious I.D parade. The police from the outset were frustrated by not being able to arrest this career burglar for several offences that he was suspected of carrying out so they seemed determined that he should be convicted of this crime. Judge Patrick’s talk was very interesting and posed many questions about police procedures and evidence gathering at that time.
