Today’s speaker was our own Vice Chairman, Chris Lockwood, who gave us a visual display of his own photographic records of Huddersfield and the Holme Valley over the last 50 years.
As a lad from Newsome he had many interesting and nostalgic pictures from the area around Castle Hill. Particularly interesting were the details surrounding Newsome Mills, and its clock tower, which was virtually the only surviving part of the building following a major fire in 2016.
It is hoped that possible restoration and improvements to the building will create a new block of high-quality apartments.
Castle Hill itself, once an iron age fort, provided many attractive and informative pictures, reminding many of us of the old hotel which stood adjacent to the Victoria Tower until the Thandi brothers got their hands on it!
The green belt surrounding the town of Huddersfield was apparent in many of the photographs, which meandered up the Holme Valley via Magdale, Berry Brow, Brockholes, Honley and Holme, as did the many activities encountered along the way, such as the Milk Race, Tour de Yorkshire and Meltham Carnival.
The building of the M62 was captured on film, as were the many forms of buses used throughout the years. He finished by reminding us of the glory days of football at Leeds Road prior to the building of the new stadium in 1994.
