The Meltham War Memorial
Michael Nolan
Today's speaker was Michael Nolan who gave an excellent audio visual talk on Meltham War Memorial based on a local man's diary and research from a number of sources. He has also produced a book on the subject available today and locally.
He showed pictures and paintings depicting war events and described how Meltham had sent 1,000 personnel and provided facilities for the injured. There were 98 dead and 200 wounded with many others suffering from post-traumatic stress. He described the impact on the village and the controversy about the war memorial on the wall of St Bartholomew's Church.
He reminded us that since the First World War the UK has been at war every day since then.
