Todays Speaker was our own Meirion Lewis talking about his Anecdotes of Working Life part1.
Meiron was born in the welsh village of Kidwelly to a Welsh speaking family and only started to speak English when he went to school. Meirion talked about his early life visiting various places in both Wales and England. The one that comes to mind was when he visited Slough Airport which we now know as London Heathrow but I suspect it has grown a lot since those early days !!
He obviously made a good impression in his early life when he was chosen to be a section leader for the Scouts parade at Windsor Castle with all the Royal Family there.
On leaving school he had a choice of doing an Apprenticeship with the National Coal Board, the Steel Works or South Wales Switchgear. It was decided that Switchgear was the right option and he started a 5 year apprenticeship.
On finishing he found out that there wasn’t a job for him and consequently he left to find employment elsewhere. Through a Rugby friend he went to work as an engineer in Wednesbury near Wolverhampton and joined the local rugby club. He then told various tales of his life mainly through rugby that showed how many things he had been involved in both in the UK and abroad.
Meirion will talk about the second chapter of his working life on 25th September but as he was finishing he said that there maybe a third part to it. We will have to watch this space !!! .
