Member's Short Talks

Today’s speakers were four members who gave excellent talks and presentations on varied subjects. Mike Wood introduced each speaker. Richard Rydon – Richard gave an entertaining insight into his childhood and growing up memories. These included his school, homelife, family trips and holidays where on one holiday they returned home with an unexploded bomb in his dad’s van. Richard also gave an enjoyable insight into the Eagle comic and the adventures of Dan Dare. Gavin Alexander – Gavin brought in several electric guitars and gave a great insight into how he made an electric Fender guitar. This included the type of wood used (Ash), creating the shape, the fret board, the flash plates and volume/control switches. Brian Smith – Brian gave an enjoyable and engaging talk about money and the coins and notes used throughout his life from the farthing through to the modern currency. This included the transformation of when the UK went decimal. Brian talked about what you could expect to buy with the old currency and compared it to modern day prices. David Booth – David gave a humorous and excellent talk about his sporting life. This included playing on the Banana Park in Meltham, playing football and rugby and his rugby league officiating when he once sent 6 players off in a game. The highlight was when David officiated at Wembley for the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final between Hull KR and Castleford. David described the amazing feeling and experience of being involved in the cup final which was attended by 80,000 people.
