The Standedge Tunnels

Today’s speaker was Trevor Ellis who gave an audio visual presentation on the Standedge Tunnel the highest, longest and deepest in the UK. He described how the tunnel was planned at the George Inn Huddersfield in 1793 planned cost was £180,000 and opened 1811. He showed pictures of the building process and inside of the tunnel noting the last traffic was in 1913.
